Algorithms: Getting a Number’s Ordinal

Well, to come up with an ordinal calculating algorithm, we have to first understand the patterns of ordinals. Let’s inspect the first hundred or so numbers and their ordinals:

So, what does this tell us? Well, in general the first, second, and third numbers have unique ordinals, and then the remainder of the numbers use the ‘th’ ordinal. In addition, each 100 numbers, the ‘teen’ values are all suffixed by the ‘th’ ordinal (in otherwords the rules for 1, 2, and 3 don’t apply).

Thankfully, by using the modulo function (which returns the remainder of a divison) makes it fairly simple to calculate the ordinal. The first unfinished approach is to (temporarily) ignore the ‘teen’ cases, and simply calculate based on the ‘st’, ‘nd’, ‘rd’, ‘th’ pattern we noticed above:

‘JSP’ means :

  • J : the Julian format.
  • SP : spells the word for the number passed to to_date
