“Unsupported major.minor version 51.0” And Install JDK on Linux Like OS

1. When we run the java program and show-up error message like below:

java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: test_hello_world :
 Unsupported major.minor version 51.0
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass1(Native Method)
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClassCond(Unknown Source)
       ......................................... 

It means we need to upgrade the jdk to run that program.

The version number shown describes the version of the JRE the class file is compatible with.

The reported major numbers are:

J2SE 8 = 52,
J2SE 7 = 51,
J2SE 6.0 = 50,
J2SE 5.0 = 49,
JDK 1.4 = 48,
JDK 1.3 = 47,
JDK 1.2 = 46,
JDK 1.1 = 45

How to download and install prebuilt OpenJDK packages

 

JDK 7

Debian, Ubuntu, etc.

On the command line, type:

$ sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jre

The openjdk-7-jre package contains just the Java Runtime Environment. If you want to develop Java programs then install the openjdk-7-jdk package.

Fedora, Oracle Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, etc.

On the command line, type:

$ su -c “yum install java-1.7.0-openjdk”

The java-1.7.0-openjdk package contains just the Java Runtime Environment. If you want to develop Java programs then install the java-1.7.0-openjdk-develpackage.

JDK 6

Debian, Ubuntu, etc.

On the command line, type:

$ sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jre

The openjdk-6-jre package contains just the Java Runtime Environment. If you want to develop Java programs then install the openjdk-6-jdk package.

Fedora, Oracle Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, etc.

On the command line, type:

$ su -c “yum install java-1.6.0-openjdk”

The java-1.6.0-openjdk package contains just the Java Runtime Environment. If you want to develop Java programs then install the java-1.6.0-openjdk-develpackage.
